Individuals ranging from ages 7 to 70 with nearsightedness and relatively healthy eyes can benefit from OrthoK.
OrthoK treats nearsightedness and, in a few cases, astigmatism. If cases of nearsightedness or astigmatism are strong, patients who use OrthoK will most likely experience "good" vision after treatment, rather than "excellent" vision.
Hyperopia (farsightedness) is treatable but results differ. Not all doctors will treat farsightedness but those who do find a fair amount of success. The results tend to be less predictable.
Children are excellent candidates, so long as their motivation and hygiene are compatible. OrthoK can help children play, swim, participate in sports and contribute to activities without glasses or contacts with OrthoK treatment. Since children are constantly growing, OrthoK will help eyes grow into the proper shape into adulthood.
The age limit for OrthoK is very high. Patients over 40 are advised to discuss OrthoK with their doctor. The power output of their custom lenses may need to be altered for their specific conditions. Many patients 60 and older have been outfitted with OrthoK and seen results.
Dr. Sun will discuss and examine your eyes with you to see if OrthoK is appropriate.
